Associated Research Projects
2006 to 2008 - Water Management with Conservation Tillage in Corn, Cotton, Peanut Rotation
General Objective: Improve irrigation water use efficiency through the use of conservation tillage in field corn, cotton, and peanut.
Rationale: These three crops account for a large majority of irrigated acreage in the state. Economic, production and conservation benefits from improvements in water use efficiency can be very large statewide.
Cooperators: This is a cooperative project among UGA's Crop and Soil Science Department, USDA-ARS National Peanut Research Laboratory, USDA-ARS Southern Piedmont Conservation Laboratory, and USDA-ARS Southeast Watershed Research Laboratory. In addition to base support from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the USDA Agricultural Research Service, research support has been provided by the Georgia Corn Commission (2005-08), Georgia Cotton Commission (2005-06) and Georgia Peanut Commission through NPC-SPRI(2008-2009).

2002 to 2005 - Corn, Cotton, Peanut Rotation
General Objective: Develop irrigation scheduling practices for field corn, cotton, and peanut when produced with conservation tillage in Georgia. Each crop also has specific research objectives.
Rationale: These three crops account for a large majority of irrigated acreage in the state. Economic, production and conservation benefits from improvements in scheduling irrigation can be very large statewide.

Corn Research
Objectives:
1. Develop and validate practical irrigation schedules for consistent high yields and quality in corn;
2. Determine minimum total water requirements for consistent growth and quality grain development under varied soil conditions; and
3. Measure in-season crop growth and soil water use to determine any periods of plant growth stress that result from the combination of soil, meteorological, and irrigation factors.

Peanut Research
Objectives:
1. Develop and validate practical irrigation schedules for consistent high yields and quality in peanut;
2. Determine minimum total water requirements for consistent growth and quality nut development under varied soil conditions; and
3. Measure in-season crop growth and soil water use to determine any periods of plant growth stress that result from the combination of soil, meteorological, and irrigation factors.
4. Measure soil water differences resulting rainfall and irrigation as they enter conventionally versus conservation tillage (high surface residue) soil.

Sprinkler Package 2002-2003:
Custom designed package (Senninger Low-Drift Nozzles #19 on drops and Nelson Half-circle Low Drift nozzles #28 on drops) with 10 psi pressure regulators and individual solenoid valve controls for each sprinkler provide 30 ft wide (five 6-foot beds) irrigation treatment strips. A second package (LEPA discharging as bubblers) provides a treatment alternative for each strip.
Sprinkler Package 2004: Custom designed package (Nelson Spinner nozzle # 38 w/red pad on drops and Nelson Part-circle spinner nozzles #28 on drops) with 10 psi pressure regulators and individual solenoid valve controls for each sprinkler provide 30 ft wide (five 6-foot beds) irrigation treatment strips. A second package (LEPA discharging as bubblers) provides a treatment alternative for each strip.
