Planning for C.M. Stripling Irrigation Research Park

On November 3, 2000, Mitchell County held a groundbreaking for a farm that they leased to UGA for development of an irrigation research and education center. A 130-acre tract of land was donated to Mitchell County for this purpose by Mr. C. M. Stripling. Mr. Stripling was a pioneer in the start of modern irrigation farming in Georgia. He was also recognized as Georgia and national Forester of the Year. His modern agriculture and forestry practices were at the heart of his desire to protect our land, water and plant resources while developing the most advanced irrigation feasible for Georgia, and especially Dougherty Plain conditions.

When farmers and the Economic Development Commission in Mitchell County learned of our desire to establish an irrigation research facility in the Dougherty Plain, they immediately set out to make it happen. Their enthusiasm and support enabled rapid development and support for the facility. With the growing concerns among farmers to make their irrigation operations more profitable, especially in view of severe periodic droughts since the late 1990's, folks from Mitchell and surrounding counties have helped to focus our expanded efforts in irrigation. With the spotlight of the state and region on reduction in agricultural water use, farmers continue to look to research and education at SIRP to help them make most efficient use of every drop they withdraw from surface and groundwater. They want to show their non-farm neighbors that they are making wise and effective use of this resource.
