| Four of
Georgia's river basins flow directly to the Atlantic Ocean.
Furthest north and east is the Savannah River. Only a small,
lower portion of the basin lies in the Coastal Plain, but the
Savannah River basin is shared between South Carolina and Georgia
all of the way from their northern boundaries with North Carolina
to the ocean. The river forms the border between those states.
South and west lies the Altamaha River. This basin lies entirely
in the Coastal Plain of Georgia., is the receiving body for
two larger watersheds - the Oconee and the Ocmulgee. Both of
these headwater basins cover large areas of the Georgia Piedmont
beginning in metro Atlanta, but their lower reaches cover the
upper Coastal Plain region. The Satilla basin south of the fall
line covers a broad area of Coastal Plain flatwoods. Finally,
the St. Mary's River which discharges into the Atlantic at Brunswick,
Georgia, originates in the Okefenokee Swamp reaches of southeast
Georgia and northwest Florida.
While
several of the river basins are forming organizations, one
looks across the basin as a region: Coastal
Rivers Regional Planning and Policy Center.
